Não reconhece a Drive cd/dvd

Boas,
tenho o 9.04 num compaq cq-210ep e a drive de cd/dvd's não me é reconhecida.
Se fôr a Locais>meu computador nem sequer lá aparece.
Se tento ver um dvd no VLC aparece-me a seguinte mensagem:
Falha ao reproduzir:

DVDRead não conseguiu abrir o disco "/dev/scd0".
A sua entrada não pode ser aberta:
VLC não consegue abrir o MRL 'dvd:///dev/scd0'. Verifique o log para detalhes.

Bem, verifica onde está o cdrom.

Entra em consola e digita

sudo lspci e

Código Selecionar Expandir

sudo lsusb

para encontrar se o cdrom é reconhecido.

Ainda com a consola aberta use

sudo dmesg  para ver como foi reconhecido

após isto verifica o teu fstab

O fstab é quem indica o ponto de montagem.

Olá,
1º Obrigado pela prontidão da resposta.
2º O problema mantém-se, esqueci-me de mencionar que apesar de nao detectada, a drive funciona, pois qd insiro um disco acende a luz indicadora e oiço-a a funcionar.
3º executei os comandos que me recomendas-te e os resultados são os que passo a transcrever (desculpa mas isto é longo....)

Entretanto fui ao "meu computador" e para além de Unidade USB e Sistema de Ficheiros, lá apareceu a Unidade DVD. Muito obrigado!
Nem cheguei a experimentar o cd de instalação (o que ia fazer de seguida), até pq como fiz o upgrade do Ubuntu 8.04 (acho) ainda não tenho um cd root desta nova versão.
Uma vez mais agradeço a tua preciosa ajuda. Aproveito para te deixar uma última questão, quando ligo o laptop após a mesagem "starting up" dá-me uma outra que iree transcrever para a secção onde tu me indicares que devo fazer a pergunta. É que creio  que dantes não me dava essa mensagem e não sei o que significa. Qual a secção correcta para deixar essa pergunta???

O certo é que desde que solucionei a questão do leitor/gravador dvd a mensagem de que me atrasava o arranque apoś o "Starting up" deixou dce aparecer, logo presumo que fosse algo relacionado com essa mesma questão.

Acho que podemos dar este thread como solucionado.

Outra vez....

Após ter resolvido o problema da drive cd/dvd, este voltou a surgir uma primeira vez, ao qual reagi repetindo todos os comandos que me indicaste e reinicie o computador para resolver tal problema.

Hoje, quase um mês mais tarde o problema voltou a surgir, repeti os comandos mas só quando reinicie o computador pela 2ª vez é que o cd/dvd foi reconhecido.

Questão:

porque volta a surgir o problema???
alguma forma de solucioná-lo definitivamente???
