Travadas aleatórias no sistema o tempo todo.

Olá a todos,

Estou tendo esse problema muito chato desde que eu instalei o Ubuntu 10.10 64-bits aqui no dia que lançou. Eu estou usando o computador normalmente, pode ser navegando na Internet ou conversando pelo emesene, ou simplesmente não fazendo nada, o sistema inteiro congela. Esse congelamento pode durar de 5 segundos a quase 1 minuto, é bem aleatório. Enquanto o sistema está congelado, somente o mouse funciona, você pode movimentá-lo pela tela mas não é possível interagir com o sistema de forma alguma até ele voltar ao normal, se algum programa estiver reproduzindo som, o som continua, mas se passa de 20 segundos ele começa a repetir os últimos segundos tocados, como em um disco arranhado. Não é possível nem mudar a tela para um terminal (ctrl + alt + F1 ... F6) para tentar determinar a origem. Após determinado tempo, o sistema simplesmente volta a responder normalmente. Essas travadas acontecem mais ou menos de meia em meia hora.
As vezes quando o sistema volta a responder, o programa que estava reproduzindo som fica mudo e só é possível fazê-lo voltar ao normal fechando e abrindo.
Esse problema parece estar ligado diretamente ao núcleo do sistema, pois já vi de acontecer logo depois de fazer login nele e sem nenhum outro programa aberto fora o GNOME em si e os programas ligados a ele. Posso também confirmar que ele acontece em instalações limpas do Ubuntu e também do Linux Mint 9 (que é uma distribuição baseada no Ubuntu, a versão 9 corresponde ao 10.10), ambos 64-bits. Não tenho certeza se isso acontece na versão 32-bits, e no meu Notebook, que está com 64-bits também, isso não ocorre (porém, isso não acontecia neste desktop até o 10.04 e também não acontece nada parecido no Windows 7).

Alguém tem alguma idéia do que pode estar acontecendo? Esse problema depois de tanto tempo começa a encher a paciência de uma forma incrível, preciso resolver isso logo  :-\

EDIT:

Outra coisa que eu notei também que sempre acontece quando o sistema trava: As ventoinhas começam a girar muito mais rápido, dá pra perceber só pelo som que elas fazem. Não sei dizer se é a ventoinha do processador ou da placa de vídeo.

Bom... Parece que o problema é o Compiz... Passei o dia inteiro com os efeitos desligados e não houve sequer uma travada. Vou continuar com ele desligado por mais tempo para ter certeza.

Talvez também a culpa não seja inteiramente do Compiz, pode ser algum tipo de incompatibilidade ou bug no driver na Nvidia que é acionado pelo Compiz, pois meu notebook, que tem uma VGA da Intel, não tem esse problema mesmo com os efeitos ligados. Mas isso é só uma teoria  ;D

já aconteceu comigo isso, e já aconteceu de até não voltar, apesar que eu não esperei mais de 2 minutos...
minha máquina tem 4gb de ram e é core2quad, e aconteceu isso comigo logo no inicio que instalei o linux (ontem rs)...
espero que não aconteça mais, pelo menos não aconteceu até agora

Bom, só para manter isso aqui atualizado na esperança de encontrar alguém que tenha a solução.

Mesmo com o Compiz desativado, o problema persiste. Na verdade, de um tempo pra cá ficou pior, acontece de 10 em 10 minutos.
Acabei de atualizar os drivers de vídeo da NVIDIA para a última versão do site, 260.19.36, e isso não resolveu nada.
