Resolução de tela no Ubuntu 8.10 não modifica.

Estava mexendo na resolução de tela no meu notebook e criei um problema. Fui em Sistema > Preferências > Resolução de Tela e alterei a resolução de 1280x800 para 1024x768. Resultado, a tela foi alterada e nada mais aparece. Só aparece a tela na resolução 1024x768. Nem sequer o cursor do mouse aparece. Sendo assim não consigo desfazer nem modificar nada.
Já tentei alterar o Xorg.conf usando o Terminal de segurança (uma das opções antes de fazer o login). Mas não obtive sucesso. Meu Xorg.conf se apresenta dessa forma:

Seguindo algumas dicas tentei forçar uma alteração incluindo as linhas na Section "Screen"

Não aconteceu nada. Após fazer o login só aparece a tela na resolução 1024x768 com cor de fundo bege e mais nada.

Alguém sabe o que pode ter acontecido ou tem alguma dica pra resolver isso?
Vou aguardar, enquanto isso terei que rodar o ubuntu direto do cd.
