como fazer a resolução 1440x900 do meu monitor funcionar?

Maehara, qual seu Ubuntu e qual sua placa de video?

Vc ja instalou o driver de video correto no seu ubuntu.
Se não, vá em Sistema > Administração > Drivers de hardware. Habilite o driver restrito, espere baixar e instalar, depois reinicie o pc.
Dependendo da versao do ubuntu, vc deverá ainda configurar o monitor (no 8.04) ou o xorg.conf (no 9.04).
