Sobre baixa resolução de tela...

Migrei esta questão, pois acho que tinha postado no forum errado (Iniciantes), talvez aqui eu ache resposta.

Caros,
sou uma usuária totalmente leiga em LINUX, mas com muita vontade de conhecer a usar para valer. Por isto e sem entender muito comprei um laptop da Amazon PC que veio com um UBUNTU desenvolvido pela ONEON. A máquina veio com vários problemas de instalação, e com um problema para se assistir vídeo já que os programas não liam alguns DVDs com legendas ou faziam a imagem ficar pulando, paravam no meio, etc.
Procurei a ONEOS e como durante duas semanas não me responderam pedi ajuda de amigos, pessoas que trabalham já com LINUX. Eles resolveram quase todos os probleminhas de instalação mas não o referente ao vídeo, assim que me sugeriram instalar o UBUNTU aberto para o que haveria mais ajuda dos grupos de discussão, etc. Fizemos isto, mas isto só piorou a qualidade da tela que está muito abaixo do seu potencial, em 800x600, sendo que pode chegar a 1200X800. Das alternativas que se nos apresentam quando queremos melhorar o desempenho da tela esta é a maior. Estou também com um UBUNTU instalado que ao que entendi é inferior ao que poderia rodar na máquina que tem 4Gb de memória RAM e processador Core duo 2. Mas não sei onde ou como pegar o outro.
As pessoas que me ajudaram falaram da placa de vídeo não ser muito compatível com LINUX (ou foi isto o que entendi), ela é OnBoard SiS M672.
Depois de ter desinstalado o UBUNTU da ONEOS e após duas semanas esperando ajuda - que não veio segundo eles por problema da conexão de internet da empresa - perdi a garantia referente ao programa. Assim que agora estou me sentindo perdida com esta máquina em mãos e sem saber muito bem o que fazer.

Para conseguir a última versão estável do Ubuntu acesse esta página: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Mas confirme qual é a versão que já está instalada, pois se já for a última (8.10) não adianta baixar denovo. Menu "Sistema" > "Sobre o Ubuntu".

Confirmando isso e tambem o modelo do notebook fica mais fácil para resolver qualquer questão.

A versão do UBUNTU que está instalada é a 8.10, o  laptop é marca Amazonpc modelo Smart L100. Com Core 2Duo, e Placa de vídeo Onboard SiSM672.

super obrigada!! Li e creio, por que ainda não efetuei, que vai dar certo. Te escrevo ao respeito quando tenha dado uns passos atrás e descoberto como e por onde fazer tudo o que é recomendado. Estou lendo no fórum questões de outros usuarios para achar a a entrada Recovery modem que não aparece  a vista facilmente no meu sistema. Estou estudando...
