Como conectar a internet usando uma conexão discada?

Olá pessoal! Estou iniciando minha experiência com o Ubuntu e ainda não sei muita coisa.

Como faço uma conexão discada usando o Ubuntu Desktop Edition 8.04?

No tópico do giguilobi ele fez uma pergunta semelhante: "Ajuda como instalar / conectar a internet usando conexão discada" Mas não estou vendo uma resposta sobre como fazer a conexão. Ah! dei uma olhada na apostilha do Ygor Abreu com link abaixo e quando entro com comando sudo pppconfig me perco na configuração da dial-up, alguém pode me ajudar? Como saber se meu modem está funcionado corretamente?
