Erro falha em dividir PTY

Prezados membros,
Sou novo na lista. Na verdade, esta consulta não é minha; mas de um amigo que largou o XP há meses para ficar apenas com o Ubuntu. E por não  localizar o problema descrito em nenhum lugar no Google, resolvi colocar aqui. O erro descrito surgiu após a atualização no Ubuntu 9.04. A imagem, cujo tamanho me impede de submetê-la, vou tentar descrevê-la. A tela exibe "Existem atualizações disponíveis para este computador". Ela contém uma lista de arquivos começando por libpurple-bin, libpurple0,libtiff4, libtiff4-dev, tamanho do download igual a 0 e toda a tela ainda 'dimmed'. Ao lado, uma caixa de diálogo com a mensagem descrita surge. Segundo ele, ele apenas clicava em "verificar" e "instalar atualizações" quando o erro começou.
Agradeço à atenção.

você habilitou todos os repositórios do synaptic? se possível poste uma screenshot mostrando o problema.

Em princípio, não houve qualquer mexida a não ser mudança de mirror, segundo relatado.
e como faço para enviar um snapshot por aqui.?

Você pode hospedar a imagem no http://tinypic.com/ ou http://imageshack.us/ e depois colar o endereço dela no topico.

Recomendaria que pelo terminal mesmo ele digitasse as linhas:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Então se houve algum problema com o processo, o apt-get vai gerar erros mais claros.

ja entendi, e vou explicar, apesar de nao ter visto perfeitamente, vc adicionou repositorios extras, e dos quais nao tenho o menor conhecimento, e talvez sem a minima confiança da minha parte, daí o problema, favor postar o conteudo do seu /etc/apt/sources.list

Eu achei um site que descreve esse teu mesmo problema:

Parece ser um erro que surgiu na versão beta, e por algum motivo que não consegui entender, pra você também. O problema é o seguinte:

Existe um script responsável por montar os pts automaticamente, chamado mountdevsubfs.sh
Primeiro verifique se esse arquivo existe com o comando:
ls /etc/init.d/ | grep mountdevsubfs

A saída deverá ser o próprio nome dele: mountdevsubfs.sh

Ok, esse script então precisa ser reiniciado junto com o ubuntu, e pra isso ele deveria estar na sua pasta: /etc/rcS.d/

Mais uma vez, faça o teste:
ls /etc/rcS.d/ | grep mountdevsubfs

A saída deverá ser "S11mountdevsubfs.sh", mas no seu caso não aparecerá nada (o que é o motivo do erro).

Então, pra corrigir isso, caso os dois testes tenham ocorrido como eu descrevi aqui, basta você criar então um link pro mountdevsubfs no seu rcS.d:

sudo ln -s ../init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh /etc/rcS.d/S11mountdevsubfs.sh

Depois reinicia o X e tenta atualizar novamente.

OBS: Se o seu caso NÃO for esse, ou seja, se você já tinha o link pro mountdevsubsfs no seu rcS.d, então por favor copie e cole a saída desses dois comandos:
ls /etc/init.d/
e
ls /etc/rcS.d/
