Bem eu já usava as versões anteriores do Ubuntu. Mas na última, 8.10, acusa esse erro e não inicia o Windows XP de forma alguma.

A minha máquina tem 3 HDs. O primeiro é um IDE (hd0,0) com o Ubuntu instalado, o segundo é SATA (sda1) com o Windows instalado e o terceiro, é um sata para arquivo.

Segue as informações do boot usando o comando sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

aparece o seguinte:

Se o Windows está no segundo HD, então deveria ser root      (hd1,0) e não root      (hd0,0) na sessão referente a ele no menu.lst.

Mas eu posso estar enganado.
sudo aptitude remove terno-e-gravata && sudo aptitude install bermuda chinelo -y

Caro amigo, obrigado. O problema foi resolvido com nova instalação trocando os respectivos sistemas operacionais. Agora não entendo porque funcionava antes... até mesmo no 8.10 antes de atualizar...
