Seepdtouch 330 usb em Ubuntu Edgy Eft

Olá a todos,
Estou a tentar mudar a minha mentalidade de utilizador IT aderindo ao mundo open source,pois já sao muitos anos de windows :p
Instalei o Linux Ubuntu Edgy Eft no meu amd 64 e tudo bem.
O problema é ligá-lo à net!
Não consigo instalar o modem Alcatel Speedtouch 330 USB pra mimnha ligação à SAPO e já faz 2 semanas que ando nisto à noite depois do trabalho.
Estou prestes a desistir, a não ser que algum de vocês aqui me ajude e eu consiga ultrapassar a situação duma vez por todas.

Eis os passos que tomei:
1o usei o famoso scripr do gothix http://gothicx.blogs.sapo.pt/8886.html
e como não funcionou segui um a um os passos descritos em http://www.guiaubuntupt.org/wiki/index.php?title=SpeedTouch_330
Fiz isto para o dapper drake. Pensei que noutra versão pudesse dar, então instalei o Edgy Eft e repeti os passos anteriores de novo.
Nada!
Depois de adicionar a flag de degub ao script eis um extracto do log escrito pelo sistema para /var/log/syslog

Alguem me pode ajudar a perceber o que se passa?
Gostava mesmo de poder aderir ao Linux como alternativa ao Windows, mas se instalar um modem é assim tão dificil,
então então como alternativa só me resta voltar ao velho windows.

Tive o mesmo problema e a única solução foi instalar o Ubuntu para 32bits.
