não consigo instalar programas pela 'central de programas'

Já tentou desinstalar o CENTRAL DE PROGRAMAS e reinstalar !!?

DESINSTALAR Software Center:
sudo apt-get remove software-center
sudo apt-get autoremove software-center
ou
sudo dpkg -r --force-all software-center


REINSTALAR Software Center:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install software-center

Tem proxy na sua rede?

Amigo, tente fazer o seguinte. Abra o Synaptic, depois abra o menu Configurações >> Repositórios.
Diga se o servidor selecionado é o brasileiro ou o principal. Experimente também trocar o servidor e dar um apt-get update pelo terminal.

Lembrei de uma coisa sobre meu problema!
Para usar a internet na faculdade tive que configurar o proxy da rede, e configurar o firefox para usar a configuração do sistema.
Hoje para usar a internet eu tenho que configurar o firefox para "autodetectar o proxy", pois quando uso a configuração do sistema fico sem internet.
Obs.: tentei desfazer o que fiz ao configurar o proxy na rede no sistema, mas apesar de te-lo feito é como se eu não o fizesse.

agora não estou mais usando o notbook na faculdade, então configurei a rede ao que era antes ou seja: "proxy da rede" "metodo automático".
