Como instalar corretamente driver de vídeo? Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Aqui gente, agora meu problema é esse... tentei atualizar o meu drive de vídeo para a minha placa de vídeo que é:
Nvidia Geforce4 MX440 AGP 8X

Segui o tutorial daqui:

fiz tudo igual (claro usando o meu driver) só que ele não instalou, já tirei o Nouveau e tentei instalar o NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.19-pkg1.run
não deu certo... reiniciei o pc e quando voltou aparece este driver:
VESA: NV18 () Board

Eu não quero este driver, pois ele dá lag nos vídeos e deixa a seta do mouse "piscando e desaparecendo"... como eu posso remove-lo e instalar o correto?

Amigo, vc já tentou a forma automatica?
menu>drivers adicionais, lá mostrará dois drivers  escolha versão current.

Não aparece nada quando eu coloco esse dos Drivers.... e ele continua com esse driver errado =/

Pelo que eu me lembre, o driver para mx440 não existe mais

Voce deveria baixar os drivers legacy => http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

Este driver então deve ser o da minha placa... o Ubuntu 12.04 LTS é pesado para ela, vou ver se consigo fazer um upgrade no hardware e pelo menos comprar uma FX5200...

Eu tenho um PC antigo que tem essa placa, igualzinha, e até o Ubuntu 11.10 ela funciona perfeitamente (compiz e tudo). Ainda não testei com o 12.04. Sempre instalei pelo modo mais fácil: pela opção drivers adicionais (no Ubuntu 11.10 aparece dois drivers, é só não escolher o driver de atualização e instalar o driver normal que vai dar tudo certo).

É só baixar a iso, conforme se é PC ou Notebook, gravar em CD e mãos à obra, instala-lo, nesse link: Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot)
