O meu windows xp estava com um spyware q fazia abrir as mais diversas propagandas no IE. Copiei o nome de uma das propagandas e procurei no registro. Encontrei o nome de todas elas na seguinte chave:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains
Só q depois q apaguei alguns, o windows começou a demorar a carregar, ás vezes entrava no modo de segurança e finalmente não abria mais. A inicialização dele pára na seguinte mensagem do GRUB:

Contudo, quando entro pelo Ubuntu, este consegue ler todos os arquivos q estão na partição do windows (como sempre fez).

O Windows xp está na partição hda1. A partição hda4 é uma q eu criei para servir de intercâmbio entre o windows e o ubuntu.
