Esse openchrome que vc sugere para instalacao, eh o do proprio repositorio do ubuntu, ou eh pegando direto do projeto OpenChrome?
vc ja obteve algum status de sucesso de alguem que utilizava o notebook SempToshiba is1522 (é o mesmo chipset, via vn 896), mesmo para a versao 8.04?
vou tentar fazer os testes hj a noite e depois posto por aqui.
O OpenChrome já vem pré-instalado no Ubuntu desde o 8.04 (não lembro se no 7.10 já vinha, mas acho que não...), e se o vídeo for VIA e se for compatível com o OpenChrome (como o VN896, VN800, etc...), o sistema configura o vídeo automaticamente (ao menos ele tenta...).
Só que o nosso problema aqui é que o sistema não está fazendo esta configuração automática de maneira correta...
Quanto ao Toshiba, não sei te responder. Só testando mesmo...

fiz os testes ontem com os arquivos xorg.conf do openchrome (tanto o modo 1, quanto o 2) os diversos tipos que vc postou no inicio do tópico e não funcionou completamente. Com a opção 1, ambiente gráfico chegou a levantar sem travar (algumas vezes a tela ficava com uns traços estranhos, mas quando reiniciava voltava ao normal), mas quando eu tentava ativar os efeitos visuais (o efeito mais simples, a opção do meio), o sistema informava que não era possível ativar os efeitos. Com a opção 2, a tela ficou toda branca e travou.
Gostaria de saber se vc poderia me dar uma ajuda para eu tentar fazer isso funcionar em meu Notebook. Tenho feito varios testes com ele, desde a versao 7.10 e não consigo ativar os efeitos mais simples, ja tentei de tudo, utilizar o driver da via, compilar o openchrome direto do projeto, e nunca consigo.
Inicialmente eu usei esse post aqui para instalar (post #29), com o Alternate CD, ele funciona mas não ativa os efeitos mais simples:
