ati radeon x1300/x1550 configuraçao

Bom dia a Todos ...

ultimamente to quebrando a cabeça com minha placa de video ,
uma Ati Radeon X1550.

estou usando ubuntu 9.04, meu monitor é  um LG de 20.5
pra ficar com uma resoluçao boa  no Windows eu usava " 1280x720 "
oque acontece é  que  no ubuntu a unica config que fica bom é
(1680x1050) (16:10)
mas  assim fica  muito pequeno .
gostaria de usar  1280x720 .

ja segui varios tuturiais , travei o xorg mais de 10 veses
enfim esta sendo uma luta , se alguem puder ajudar eu agradeço .

so  mais  uma coisa ..
semana passada instalei debian testing e segui o tutu do wiki debian
para instalaçao do driver ati deu certo instalou apreceu a configuraçao
1280x720  funcionou 2D e 3D
mas quando reiniciei deu um problema no gdm
e por fim tive que  formatar mais  uma  vez .

ja nao sei mais  oque fazer  .

Curioso é que parece que o driver esta configurado.

Estranho meu Xorg  nao aparece aquele monte de configuraçoes

esta somente assim ...
