Nvidia Tnt 2 no (K)Ubuntu 9.10

Olá pessoal!

Meu pc tem uma placa de vídeo RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro. Em outros tópicos do fórum encontrei alguns resolvidos para versões anteriores do ubuntu, porém algumas coisas mudaram na versão 9.10.

Antigamente, parece que era só instalar o pacote nvidia-glx-legacy, e depois disso digitar o codigo

sudo nvidia-glx-config enable
e estava resolvido. Porém o pacote nvidia-glx-legacy não existe mais; ao tentar instalá-lo com apt-get, eis o que acontece:

O pacote nvidia-glx-legacy não está disponível, mas é referenciado por outro pacote.
Isto pode significar que o pacote está faltando, ficou obsoleto ou
está disponível somente a partir de outra fonte
No entanto, os pacotes a seguir o substituem:
  nvidia-glx-96 nvidia-glx-173
E: O pacote nvidia-glx-legacy não tem candidato para instalação

já tentei instalá-los, mas não consegui fazer a placa funcionar ainda. Alguém saberia como resolver esse problema?

Olha só, descobri que os pacotes de repositório da nvidia não suportam mais esses drivers. No README do pacote nvidia-glx-96 está escrito:

ou seja, agora só pelo driver disponível no site da nvidia, que eu já tentei e não funcionou também... vou tentar de novo, enfim...

baixei novamente o driver legacy da nvidia; após instalá-lo (sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.11-pkg1.run), se eu mudo o Xorg.conf para carregar o driver da nvidia, ele fala que não conseguiu carregar o módulo.

Sendo que o erro acontece quando tento mudar o driver para "nvidia".

Alguém poderia me ajudar? Não sei mais o que tentar...
