ubuntu nao inicia depois da tela de login

É o seguinte, eu tive esse mesmo problema quando forcei os efeitos gráficos da minha placa de vídeo, e acontecia o mesmo erro APENAS no meu login... quando entrava no root ou em qualquer outro ficava normal... por isso to te falando... de ctrl + alt + f1, logue com seu login e depois de um sudo su pra ficar como root e faça o que falei.

Quando tento iniciar o X com meu usuário normal (não o root) ele exibe uma mensagem de erro:
"error in locking authority file /home/jonathan/.Xauthority"

Esse arquivo "~/.Xauthority", aqui em minha máquina ele me pertence. Pq na sua ele pertence ao root?

Acho sim. Acho mais seguro tirá-lo do caminho, pois ele pode ter sido criado pelo root pra "uso próprio". Apagado ou renomeado, o sistema irá recriá-lo com o conteúdo correto.

Eu renomeei o arquivo para .Xauthority.old e continua nao entrando na conta. Quando entrei no terminal e dei o comando startx do meu usuário apareceu de novo a mesma mensagem "error in locking authority file /home/jonathan/.Xauthority"

Tbm pede para ver o log em /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

Nesse meio tempo, vc não fez nada que poderia ter criado novamente o arquivo, como um SSH como root a partir de outra máquina, né?

Abra o pc, ranque a placa de vídeo e plugue o cabo na saída on board

Repeti o processo mais duas vezes:
Iniciei o sistema como root, abri a pasta /home/jonathan e renomeei o arquivo .Xauthority para .Xauthority.old e em seguida reiniciei o computador e tentei me logar usando minha conta normal.
Não deu certo.
Quando entro como root de novo o arquivo .Xauthority já está la de novo e aquele erro aparece aparece no terminal se tento me logar com a conta normal.

Este processo está correto ou estou esquecendo de algo?

Tinha que estar correto... esse arquivo tem que ser criado com o seu usuário. Uma coisa que vc poderia tentar fazer, seria criá-lo na marra, e fazê-lo pertencer ao seu usuário:

cd /home/jonathan
mv .Xauthority .Xauthority.old
touch .Xauthority
chown jonathan:jonathan .Xauthority

Mais uma vez eu repeti o processo 2 vezes sem resultado.
os erros que aparecem qndo se tenta iniciar pelo usuario normal:

Acredito que se executar os comandos e fazer a instalação na linha de comando não há motivo pra remover a placa, afinal de contas ela nao será usada e nem o driver carregado enquanto eu nao iniciar o X.
Se eu simplemente reinstalar o driver pelo synaptics nao vai funcionar? (pergunta de um desesperado)

Quando aconteceu esse problema comigo eu só consegui resolver desse jeito que te falei, e o driver foi baixado no site da Nvidia, o do Synaptic não funfou aqui.

Ola pessoal, sei q ja faz algum tempo mas fica o registro para problemas futuros.
Estava com o mesmo problema "...depois de colocar login e senha fazia q entrava mas voltava para a tela de login..."

No meu caso aconteceu pq coloquei inadvertidamente um arquivo .sh na pasta /etc/profile.d
 quando iniciava, o ubuntu tentava executar o tal arquivo, como nao conseguia voltava para a tela de login.

Entrei pelo console e apaguei o bendito arquivo.

Boa noite pessoal, sou novo aqui no fórum e sei que esse tópico e antigo, mais gostaria  de compartilhar como eu resolvi esse problema e como aconteceu.
Estava fazendo testes com o startx e após a reinicialização da maquina não conseguia mais sai da tela de login, loguei no crt+alt+f2 como usuário root executei os seguintes comandos.
# ls -la /home/g
e encontrei o arquivo .Xauthority, renomeei o arquivo para Xauthorityyyy
# mv /home/g/.Xauthority Xauthorityyyyy, após isso acessei a parti gráfica com o meu usuário e o carrego sem problemas.
