Placa de Video VIA Technologies Não consigo instalar o driver no Ubuntu 8.10

Opa pessoal,
Sou novo aqui no forum! meu primeiro tópico.
Andei esses últimos 2 dias pesquisando mas não conseguir resolver o problema apenas com pesquisas. O problema é que o Ubuntu 8.10 não reconheceu minha placa de vídeo.(Eu tenho 2 semanas de ubuntu, sou um pouco inexperiênte)
Já fiz de tudo editei o /etc/X11/xorg.conf e não conseguir. o máximo que conseguir foi ajeitar a resolução da tela de login, após ter copiado e colado um xorg.conf de uma pesquisa que fiz no site vivaolinux. Mas, não conseguir instalar os efeitos.

Minha placa é a :

(Conseguir usando o comando lspci | grep VGA)

Já fui no viaarena.com na parte de drivers de video para Ubuntu, mas só tem para a versão do kernel que o Ubuntu 7.4 utilizava.

Não consigo colocar os efeitos de área de trabalho. Nem no modo normal. Fica somente com "Nenhum". Isso é sem graça, e também acho que o Computador não está trabalhando normal. Pois conheci um Ubuntu que tinha somente 512mb de RAM e também não tinha placa aceleradora 3D e rodava rápido e com o Efeitos visuais compiz

Não quero somente efeitos,  é que até para altenar entre janelas, o computador fica meio lerdo. E acho que é pq o Driver não foi reconhecido.

Alguém poderia me ajudar com isto? :confused:
