Pessoal sou novo no pedaço, resolvir instalar o ubuntu 8.10 em uma segunda partição , para ficar com dual boot , porém tá entrando direto no ubuntu . Como faço para iniciar o winxp.

Amigo faça o seguinte:
- Abra o terminal e digite:
sudo nautilus
Navegue até a pasta /boot/grub
Abra o arquivo menu.lst
Copie e poste aqui pra gente.
Estamos no aguardo.

Falando sério, não encontrei nada nas configurações de boot para definir isso.
Em primeiro lugar, como fez para instalar? Está seguro de que manteve a partição primária ntfs do windows, instalando o Ubuntu em outra partição?

Como fez para instalar?
Comigo aconteceu também essa "coisa boa" rsrsrsr
Brincadeiras à parte...
Pelo que entendi, ele instalou o ubuntu em outro HD, de repente, o grub colocou o ubuntu como boot direto e não reconheceu a partição do winXP, ou, deixou as linhas do menu.lst na partição do win como comentário. (algo menos provável), mas vamos ver o menu.lst dele pra ver como está lá.
Caso contrário descrevo a ele como reinstalar o grub via liveCD.

Isso mesmo, a senha não aparece por medida de segurança, mas ela está sendo digitada sim.
O modo terminal é o consola mesmo, estou no aguardo.

Não amigo, não é o conteúdo do terminal, e sim do arquivo menu.lst

Tem que saber se o HD dele é SATA ou IDE, pois se for IDE não seria sda e sim hda. :-[

PRESS KEY TO CONTINUE.
Teclei enter e apareceu a tela do dual boot, pore o do windows 95/98/NT/2000 , não entra.
OBS: meu HD é sata.

Insira novamente o caracter # nas linhas que vc apagou e tente o que o nosso amigo rsmb postou.
Só uma coisa... Você está usando 2 HDs ou somente um?

Estou usando um hd dividido.
C: 80GB
D: 80GB , que instalei o ubuntu e dividi par / , /home e swap.

Pelo que entendi você tem um HD de 160Gb, sendo que, 80Gb são para o Windows e 80Gb para o ubuntu (e nessa partição do ubuntu ainda é dividida com a partição swap). Certo?

Dica do nosso amigo rsmb.
Salve e depois feche o arquivo. Antes faça um backup, se caso houver algum erro no sistema a gente consegue consertar. ;)

Restaurei os # , inseri essas linhas salvei e agora o ubuntu tá entrando direto de novo , nem sinal do win xp.
Tem com desinstalar o ubuntu para acertar. Depois eu reinstalo.
Gente se eu não acertar isso hoje , amanhã sou um cara morto,opessoal aqui em casa só sabe usar o win xp.

Você tem instalado o gparted aí no seu ubuntu?
Caso não tenha, faça o seguinte:
- Abra o consola (terminal) e digite:
sudo apt-get install gparted
Após instalação verifique se a partição do windows está lá.

A partição do Win está com algum erro pelo que parece, mas acalme-se. Você consegue visualizar seus arquivos na partição do win pelo nautilus?
Para inserir uma imagem basta digitar:
"[img] "nome do arquivo" [/img]" Não digite as aspas!!! rsrsrs
Olha terei que sair agora, mas não se preocupe, amanhã retorno pra te ajudar aqui, ou, outro amigo com certeza vai te ajudar.
Te recomendo fazer um backup de seus arquivos na partição do windows salvando-os em um CD/DVD (se você estiver conseguindo visualizá-los pelo nautilus).

Dá um Print Screen no seu teclado. Ao menos aqui no Xubuntu ele já oferece para salvar a imagem automaticamente

Descupe ai o trabalho , e vamos varar a noite. EHEHEHEHEH.
clica em print screen como se fosse o windows, depois abra o Gimp em Aplicativos/Gráficos/Editor de Imagem GIMP, e depois cole a imagem lá e salve.
Nautilus é como se fosse o "windows explorer" do linux rsrsrsrs (desculpe a comparação, foi meramente ilustrativa). Para abrir o nautilus basta digitar no consola:
nautilusPronto ele abrirá, ou basta vc ir em Locais/Pasta pessoal
Pronto tambeḿ estará utilizando o nautilus. ;)
Estou tendo que sair agora, pena não poder te ajudar mais hoje, ficará pra amanhã infelizmente tenho compromisso :-[ :(

a imagem que você postou lá tá muito pequena
posta uma img maior, porque não estou enxergando aqui
Pelo que pude ver, tem uma partição sda5 dentro de uma sda1, a qual está como estendida. Entretanto, o Windows deve estar numa partição primária.
Além disso, tem mais de 7MB desperdiçados, que precisam ser formatados para poder usar. Ou seja, a instalação parece ter tido vários problemas.
Como você instalou o Ubuntu? Não sei como corrigir isso agora, mas parece que o ideal vai ser formatar tudo de novo e deixar o Windows como partição primária.
Só pra dar uma idéia de como deveria ficar:
