Cara, realmente efeitos 3D não vai conseguir, já virei várias noites tentando configurar o meu xorg.conf para permitir os efeitos, mas as placas via realmente é muito complicado.
Mas para iniciar o ubuntu normalmente no ambiente gráfico, faz o seguinte:
1 - Depois que escolher o idioma, pressione F6, então vai poder digitar algum comando.
2 - Digita o seguinte: i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa
3 - Pressione ENTER.
Com isso o ubuntu vai ser forçado a iniciar com as configurações de vídeo default, mas a resolução e tal não vai ficar 100%, dai depois que você instalar o ubuntu configura o xorg.conf para o vídeo ficar legal (mas sem os efeitos), para configurar o vídeo, vou postar aqui o passo a passo, juntamente com o melhor xorg.conf que encontrei para esse not, depois de ter testado pelo menos umas 6 configurações diferentes,
1 - Acesse o diretório como /etc/X11 como root é claro.
2 - Faz uma cópia do arquivo xorg.conf (para que caso algo dê errado pode voltar ele).
3 - Abre um editor de texto de sua preferência e cola o seguinte nele sem as linhas tracejadas.

4 - Salva o arquivo com o nome xorg.conf e coloca no diretório citado no item 1.
Pronto, com isso o vídeo vai aceitar a resolução máxima com as letras totalmente legíveis e tudo mais....!
mas infelizmente sem efeitos...!
