No teu caso é mais facil. Basta inserires sudo alsamixer e aumentares o som master e PCM.
Outra coisa que pode ajudar muita gente. O Ubuntu tem um bug que é necessário fazer killall esd para conseguir entrar no gnome. Mas já descobri como resolver isso. basta instalar o libesd0, que vai substituir o libesd-alsa0.

Afinal não foi por ter feito as actualizações que funcionou(porque só funcionou uma vez depois das actualizações). Descobri posteriormente que existe um processo que nunca é dado como terminado. Como disse em cima, eu ouvia os tambores e depois nada de som... Pois isso era o problema, o comando que iniciava os tambores nunca era terminado. Assim a solução é apenas inserir numa consola:
killall aplay
Espero ter ajudado as pessoas que tenham este tipo de problemas.

Bem depois de um fim de semana a tentar por o som a funcionar, lá consegui po-lo. Deveria faltar alguma biblioteca, que fiquei sem saber qual. Para outros utilizadores que tenham o mesmo problema aqui vai a descrição dele e como o resolvi.
Sintomas:
O som funcionava no inicio, isto é, ouvia-se os tambores no login, e depois de entrar no ubuntu aparecia como se tivesse som (com o icone para aumentar e diminuir o som a funcionar) mas nenhuma aplicação funcionava com som. Além disso qualquer aplicação para ler ficheiros audio e cd's bloqueava. O mais estranho é que a placa de som (ATI IXP AC97) estava instalada correctamente.
Solução:
Depois de andar a bater com a cabeça no computador por causa do som, tentei por ultimo instalar as aplicações de multimédia que conhecia, na perspectiva que fosse a falta de uma biblioteca. Fui à página http://ubuntuforum-pt.org/index.php?topic=15522.0 e fiz:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras sun-java6-fonts cpdvd faac faad ffmpeg flac gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-gl gstreamer0.10-pitfdll gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse gstreamer0.10-sdl lame mp3gain x264-bin mpg123 mpg321 gqmpeg regionset mjpegtools sox xmms xmms-flac xmms-mp4 xmms-musepack xmms-scrobbler xmms-skins xmms-status-plugin
xmms-wma mplayer mplayer-fonts mplayer-skins mozilla-mplayer xine-ui libxine1 libxine-extracodecs rar unrar p7zip-full p7zip unace
sudo apt-get install w32codecs libdvdcss2 acroread acroread-plugins mozilla-acroread
Por fim reiniciei o computador e ficou bom.

Iniciantes / Problema com o Som no Feisty[RESOLVIDO]

Tenho um Toshiba A60, tinha o Ubuntu 6.10 a funcionar correctamente mas optei por fazer ums instalação completa do Feisty. Tudo correu bem, só que não tenho som. Oiço os tambores no GDM, mas depois passo para o gnome e nada. Aparece o simbolo do volume, o nde posso aumentar ou diminuir o som, mas nunca dá som. Quando ligo o soud Juicer para ouvir um CD, o sund Juicer bloqueia. o mplayer não funciona.
No mplayer se uso o output o alsa aparece

Se uso o ESD aparece:
