Servidor X não funciona após atualização do Ubuntu

Recentemente instalei o Ubuntu 4.10 "Warty Warthog" (kernel 2.6.8.1-3-386) e uma partição do HD de meu PC.
Tudo estava funcionando perfeitamente, mas após efetuar o comando sudo apt-get install mozilla-firefox-locale-pt-br e
posteriormente o comando sudo apt-get update, o servidor X deixou de funcionar e agora só consigo acessar o Ubuntu
em modo texto. Efetuei o comando startx sem sucesso. Dei também o comando sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xorg mas não funcionou. O problema é que o sistema indica que não existe o arquivo xorg. Gostaria que alguém me indicasse o que fazer pois quero ter acesso a minha interface gráfica novamente e não quero ter que reinstalar o Ubuntu.
Qualquer dica pelo amor de Deus. Minha placa de vídeo é uma Radeon9600 com 128 Mb de memória.

Parabéns, essa foi uma das dúvidas mais bem explicadas que eu já vi por aqui. Agora, tem certeza que foi update e não upgrade? Se foi update mesmo, acredito que a falha não tenha sido ocasionada por causa disso.

Sobre o sistema indicar que não existe o xorg, é normal, pois no Warty o X usado ainda era o XFree86. Portanto, te indicaria o seguinte comando:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xfree86

É uma pena que não queira reinstalar o Ubuntu, porque sua versão é 1 ano mais antiga que a versão atual, e em Abril já sai uma nova. O Warty pode ser usado tranqüilamente, mas as diferenças entre ele e o Breezy (atual) são muitas ;)

aproveitando o topico, enfrento um problema semelhante, apos recompilar o kernel o sistema nao inicia mais o modos gráfico, alias, depois q carrega a imagem no boot do lilo nao aparece mais nada. com o disco de boot do slack eu consigo logar no modo texto, mas ocorre um erro ao iniciar o servidor X.
a questao é, seria conveniente esse comando?  $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xorg
(baseado no seu exemplo acima)
se nao, como devo proceder?

Bom, você fez alterações no Kernel, então acho que a chance de funcionar é menor, mas não custa tentar ^^
Ele serve pra reconfigurar o servidor gráfico, então vai te fazer diversas perguntas sobre modo de vídeo e monitor.

ok, bom estou online agora pelo ubuntu live, pois o unico disco de boot q eu tinha q era o do slack corrompeu

bom, acredito que pelo live esse utilitário nao tem muita utilidade, pois nao vai modificar os arquivos instalados no HD certo?

acabo de montar o sistema de arquivos do meu ubuntu que esta em hda7, e agora estou na duvido no que alterar nas configuraçoes

Lassard, obrigado pela dica mas pensei no que vc falou e resolvi instalar o Ubuntu 5.10 em meu PC. Está funcionando perfeitamente.

estou com o mesmo problema! dei update no ubuntu aqui e nao inicia mais o grafico, estou sem pc ja faz 1 semana nao sei o que fazer ja fiz de tudo, eu reinstalo e dou update acontece a mesma coisa, o que posso fazer?
