Sou iniciante no linux - Gostaria de testar o Ubuntu, mas meu notebook é cce

Tem pouco tempo que estou usando o linux. Foi um choque a primeira vista, quase desisti. Mas agora estou começando entender melhor e estou gostando. Pelo que andei pesquisando, o Ubuntu é um dos melhores distribuições devido ao grande número de usuários, bom suporte, facilidades, etc.
Mas estou com uma grande dúvida. Meu notebook é cce XLE 432 ----> chipset SIS M672FX / SIS 968. Isso não É UM TÓPICO REPETIDO.. Eu pesquisei e vi que a SIS não libera o driver de instalação para o mundo linux, liberou só para o SATUX, não sei pq.. Porém, vi que alguns colegas conseguiram rodar o Ubuntu mesmo com a SIS. Gostaria de saber se valerá a pena meu esforço de tentar rodar o Ubuntu 9.10 (com boa resolução) diante de todas as limitações que a SIS impõe ao SOs linux. Alguém tem uma solução BOA para meu problema? Se for pra morrer de ficar lendo um tanto de informações e executando milhares de procedimentos, eu desisto (afinal de contas eu sou muito iniciante e tenho q começar pelo básico). Deixarei para qd eu comprar outro notebook. Complicado a gente saber tanta coisa na hora de comprar um notebook.. Lamentável..

Aguardo uma solução. Agradeço desde já a todos que puderem colaborar de alguma forma.

Já tentou rodar uma sessão live-CD para ver se tudo fica bem? Se rodar bem no Live, vai ficar igual após a instalação.

Tentei pelo live cd.. Infelizmente deu o q todos estavam reclamando: a resolução fica ruim (800x600) e o sistema não reconhece o monitor. A rede wireless reconheceu o sinal, mas não conectou. Não se é pq tem senha e o meu tplink tá configurado no "hexadecimal" e nem vi essa opção no Ubuntu. Confesso que em relação ao wireless nem sei se to falando coisa com coisa..

Eu achei algo no forum e parece que pode resolver meu problema pq minha placa é 672. Vejam:

Cara minha placa é uma SIS 672 e resolvi o problema modificando o xorg.conf assim!!
